A guided taste of the Swedish west coast 

Travellers might wonder when the best time is to sample the well-renowned shellfish of West Sweden; the answer is during the months containing an 'R'. Between September and April, when the coastal waters are at their clearest, the local company Skärgårdsidyllen hosts a new food walk in Grebbestad.

Known as Sweden's "Oyster Capital," this picturesque seaside town provides the backdrop for a two-to-three-hour tour that begins at 14:00. The experience is priced at 1,500 SEK per person and includes six stops where participants can sample local delicacies:

• Grebbestad oysters and fresh shrimp or crayfish.
• Seaweed and traditional pickled herring.
• Locally brewed beer and a classic Swedish fika.

The tour focuses on local produce and the stories of the ingredients that have given this region its world-renowned reputation for seafood.

Dine beneath vaulted ceilings at Österplana

Architecture enthusiasts and food lovers are finding a common interest at Österplana Agriturismo. Originally opened in 2024, this church, built in 1875, has now been carefully transformed into a restaurant and cultural venue. Following its deconsecration in 2024, the building now serves as a vibrant meeting place on the Kinnekulle plateau, approximately 150 kilometres northeast of Gothenburg.

The interior retains its historic character, with guests dining under soaring vaulted ceilings. Original church pews have been cleverly repurposed as serving counters and dining tables. While specific dining prices are determined by the seasonal availability of local ingredients, the kitchen prioritises dishes built around produce sourced from the surrounding landscape and Lake Vänern.

Beyond its culinary offering, the site serves as:

• A cultural hub: Hosting concerts, weddings, and performing arts within an atmospheric setting.
• A natural gateway: Located near nature reserves and hiking trails, the venue also features a garden inspired by the unique flora of Kinnekulle.
